Moving In.

Well we moved in on the 6th May.
What a day to pick, the flight to Inverness was the only flight going north, all the rest were halted by the ash cloud from the volcanic eruption in Iceland. The plane headed up the East Coast to avoid the cloud arriving at Inverness an hour later than scheduled. That was the last flight North for a week.
It has taken us four weeks to sort out all the boxes & crates, Jill managed to sell some of the surplus at a table top sale at the local school, and managed to sale the two single beds and mattresses. We had to wait a month for the broadband connection.
Damien came to stay for a week, the weather was good and we went Bird watching and walking most days. Damien said, “ with an Island named after us we must pay a visit” so on Thursday Damien and I took the Ferry to Hoy, only forty minutes from Houton. We were met at Hoy by the bus that was to take us around the island, the driver was very good stopping at the various sites of interest and giving a commentary. The bus only run’s for the summer season and is the only one on Hoy, they have no bus service as there are only four hundred people living on the Island. We saw a pair of Red – throated Divers with their young, another new bird for Damien.
Well the week went quick and Damien returned home with at least ten new birds to his list

The Second part of the Journey.

Bristol to St Margaret’s Hope, Orkney

Saturday 24th April. We started off from Dave’s Depot at 11.00am, heading up towards Inverness where we would make an overnight stop. Well the journey was uneventful , the Motorway was clear all the way and the weather was dry and sunny. A lunch stop at Westmoreland Motorway services .we eventually stopped for the night at Broxden Services near Perth , after a long day it was time to get some food and have an early night.
Sunday 25th.
We were on the road again by 6.20am heading up past Inverness towards the top of Scotland, We stopped off at Pittlockery to see the Dam and Salmon ladder, before heading on north, we arrived at Gills Bay at about mid afternoon to catch the ferry to St Margaret’s Hope. The Ferry trip was uneventful and we were soon settled in at the Murray Arm’s Hotel.
Monday 26th.
A good nights sleep and we were ready to unload, apart from the persistent rain the move went quickly and we were finished by late afternoon. After our evening meal we spent the evening in the bar talking to the landlord and the locals, a nice ending to a long day.
Tuesday 27th.
Today we went sightseeing and bird watching Driving around in the lorry, you get a great view from the cab. First we went to Kirkwall and then to Stromness and back to St Margaret’s Hope, Plenty of good birds including Great northern Diver, Short eared Owl & Long tailed Duck, total number of species was about thirty.
Wednesday 28th.
Early morning Ferry and we were on the road again, it took us a day and a half to get back ,arriving back at the yard at midday.
A big thank you to Dave who made it all work so well.
